Research

The department uses the facilities of the École Polytechnique I.T. laboratory (LIX). Situated at the heart of the Research Centre on the École Polytechnique campus in Palaiseau, the “X” I.T. laboratory (LIX) is a combined X-CNRS research unit with a hundred members, half of whom are doctoral students, with forty permanent staff evenly distributed between CNRS, INRIA and “X”.

LIX' activities fall into three major domains: algorithmics, networks and formal methods.
Among the ten teams working on the laboratory premises, there are 6 INRIA projects that have been running at LIX since the Joint I.T. Research Centre was set up on the Plateau de Saclay, and a joint team with CEA LIST that is a forerunner of future joint projects between teams of different origins arising out of RTRA Digiteo.
Finally, LIX is home to the Chair in Complex Industrial Systems financed by Thalès. In all these respects, it has become a key academic player in the System@tic competitive cluster.
LIX is particularly interested in the field of network communications with a view to achieving global expertise in signal processing, communications coding and routing, calculation distribution and mobility, security and protocol engineering.
At the heart of this research, the aim of which is to design reliable, efficient communication systems, emphasis is placed on mobile networks, which will become a key component of future embedded systems.
The laboratory is heavily involved in École Polytechnique's teaching and in a number of MASTER's programs in the Paris region. It has contractual relations with public bodies (Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the General Delegation for Ordnance, The French Agency for Innovation, INRIA, etc.) and international organisations.
In recent years, LIX has been keen to develop a wide range of partnerships with the world of industry. In addition to Thalès, our major international partners include Microsoft Research, Hitachi Labs and NASA.
